A Legacy Baked Into Every Crumb
In 1983, Steve Jacobs made a bold decision: he left a career in Higher Education to start a home food service business delivering meats and seafood directly to families across Massachusetts. It was a leap of faith — and it came with an unexpected twist.
With every order, Steve included a freshly baked coffee cake as a thank-you gift for his customers. He never imagined what would happen next. Before long, customers began calling not for meats or seafood, but for the cake. "Just the cake for now," they'd say. And the direction of his life changed forever.
For years, Steve operated as The Gypsy Baking Company — a fitting name for a baker without a home kitchen of his own. Every Sunday, he would travel up to 50 miles to rent shuttered bakeries for the day, mixing and baking his cakes before sunrise, then delivering them fresh. It was an extraordinary commitment to a craft he had come to love.
In 1999, that wandering chapter came to a close. Steve established a permanent, 3,000 square foot production facility in Milford, Massachusetts — a real home for a bakery that had earned one. The Boston Tea Cake Company was officially rooted, and the cakes that once traveled town-to-town in the back of a car could now ship across the entire country.
Today, every cake is still made from scratch using the same devotion to quality that turned a free gift into a calling. We operate a 100% nut-free bakery facility and use only kosher-certified ingredients — because a cake this special should be one that everyone can enjoy.
